Coronal Hole Boundaries and Their Interactions with Adjacent Regions

چکیده
Coronal hole boundaries are the interfaces between regions where the coronal magnetic field contains a significant component which is open into the heliosphere and regions where the field is primarily closed. It is pointed out that there are constraints on the magnetic field which opens into the heliosphere that must be satisfied in the corona: it must come into pressure equilibrium in the high corona, and the component of the field which connects to the polar regions of the Sun must differentially rotate. A model is presented in which satisfying these constraints determines which field lines are open and which are closed, and thus where the polar coronal hole boundaries occur. Some of the consequences of this model are discussed.

Automated Coronal Hole Detection using Local Intensity Thresholding Techniques
We identify coronal holes using a histogram-based intensity thresholding technique and compare their properties to fast solar wind streams at three different points in the heliosphere. The thresholding technique was tested on EUV and X-ray images obtained using instruments onboard STEREO, SOHO and Hinode. The full-disk images were transformed into Lambert equal-area projection maps and partitio...
متن کاملSpectroheliograms and Photospheric Magnetograms
Amethod for automated coronal hole detection using He I 1083 nm spectroheliograms and photospheric magnetograms is presented here. The unique line formation of the helium line allows for the detection of regions associated with solar coronal holes with minimal line-of-sight obscuration across the observed solar disk. The automated detection algorithm utilizes morphological image analysis, thres...

We have recently noticed cellular features in Fe xii 193 Å images of the 1.2 MK corona. They occur in regions bounded by a coronal hole and a filament channel, and are centered on flux elements of the photospheric magnetic network. Like their neighboring coronal holes, these regions have minority-polarity flux that is ∼0.1–0.3 times their flux of majority polarity. Consequently, the minority-po...

White-light measurements made by the SOHO LASCO C2 and C3 coronagraphs and the Mk III Mauna Loa K-coronameter, ranging from 1.15 to 30 have been combined with Kitt Peak daily He I R _ , 1083 nm coronal hole maps, and full Sun Y ohkoh soft X-ray images, to show that the boundaries of polar coronal holes, as determined by measurements of path-integrated density, extend approximately radially into...
متن کاملLarge - scale Bright Fronts in the Solar Corona : A Review of “ EIT waves ”
EIT waves” are large-scale coronal bright fronts (CBFs) that were first observed in 195 Å images obtained using the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Commonly called “EIT waves”, CBFs typically appear as diffuse fronts that propagate pseudo-radially across the solar disk at velocities of 100–700 km s−1 with front widths of 50–100 ...
